D-Link Corporation was established in March 1986 in Taipei as Datex Systems Inc. It started as a network interface vendor and then became a designer, developer and manufacturer of network solutions for the consumer and business market.

In 2007, it was the leading network company in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SMB) segment worldwide with a 21.9% market share. In March 2008, with 33% of the total market, it became the market leader in sending Wi-Fi products worldwide. In 2007, the company was included in the list of "Info Tech 100", a list of the world's best IT companies. BusinessWeek was also ranked the 9th best IT company in the world for shareholder returns.

The company has 127 sales offices in 64 countries and 10 global distribution centers serving 100 countries worldwide.

D-Link operates an indirect channel model, sales through distributors, resellers, retailers, VARS and telecommunications service providers.

Its main competitors are Cisco, Netgear and HP.
