Mid-November is a good time to perform the seasonal tire change for winter tires. The decreasing temperature and local morning frosts may surprise you on your way to work. If you like to DIY or have never done it, and you would like to try it, everything will go smoothly and quickly with our post. All those who do not have the second set of wheels will unfortunately have to go to the vulcanization plant, and it is better to do it before the first snow to avoid queues in front of the vulcanization plant. Simple tools that every car owner or DIY enthusiast should have on hand are enough to change wheels. Having a more extensive set of tools will go faster.

Replacing winter wheels with where to start.

Park the car on an even, stable and hardened surface, pull the handbrake. Note: it is important that the place where we will perform wheel changes is safe. It is forbidden to change wheels in coves or public parking lots because it may not only result in a fine, but also the risk of loss of health or life. It is best if we have our own driveway or we do it in our own garage.

We loosen the bolts of each wheel, but do not completely unscrew them. For this purpose, we can use a manual wheel wrench, e.g. DEDRA 17M050 cross wrench or a telescopic pipe wrench 17M054 , which can be extended thanks to the extendable handle to increase the leverage. This solution is very useful in the case of seized screws, which cannot be unscrewed without much pressure.

For those whose garage or home workshop is equipped with a compressor, we recommend PANSAM A533161 pneumatic impact wrenches with a torque of 310Nm or A533162 with a torque of 570Nm . But not everyone has a compressor in their garage. In such cases, we recommend the DED7973 electric impact wrench , equipped with a set of 4 impact sockets in the most popular sizes 17, 19, 21, 22 and with a power of 450Nm, which will be able to loosen and tighten screws. And it's all powered from the socket. Everything is fine, but what to do, how is access to electricity from the network also a problem, e.g. in an underground garage? We also have a solution for this - an 18V battery powered impact wrench - DEDRA DED7146. The wrench is equipped with a very efficient brushless motor that achieves a torque of 280NM, which is sufficient to work on the car. The replaced wrench is powered by a Dedra SAS + ALL system battery, so you can also use the same battery for many other tools, for example in the DED7073 compressor, to check the pressure in the wheels or to refill them. The battery fits all SAS + ALL power tools, so keep this universal solution in mind.

How to unscrew and tighten aluminum rims.

For lovers of cars with pampered alloy rims, the 17M003 wheel impact sockets with a rim protection coating are a must . The set includes four caps in sizes 17, 19, 21 mm, all closed in a small onea box worth having in your car's glove compartment.

Raising the car before removing the wheels completely.

When we manage to loosen the bolts in the wheels, we start lifting the car. We use the holes and technological places in our car intended for this purpose. If we do not know where to put the jack, let's have a look at the manual, which we can easily find on the Internet. Place a metal manger or spare wheel under the raised side of the car. This will protect the hub and suspension from damage in the event of the car falling off the jack.

Proper unscrewing the wheels before the seasonal wheel change.

Unscrew the previously loosened wheel bolts and remove the wheel. The rim may have burned slightly with the hub flange. A solid kick or hammer blow to the edge of the tire is enough to release it. Note, it's better not to jerk the wheel, so as not to slide the car off the jack!

It is a good practice to describe its location on the car immediately on the wheel. If you were wondering what the vulcanizer writes on the wheel, it is the marking which wheel occupied what position in the car. This makes it easier to identify technical problems in the car, eg incorrect geometry, wear of the suspension, etc. It is also easier, if necessary, to transfer the set of wheels working on the rear axle to the front. Due to the weight distribution of the car and the forces affecting braking, it is the front wheels that wear out faster and with the rear wheel spacer to the front, we can remove the need to buy new tires - within common sense, of course. Additionally, by mounting the wheels in the same place, we practically guarantee that the driving comfort should not change after they are put back on. Two letters can save a lot of stress and money in looking for the causes of steering wheel vibration, also chalk in the hand:

  • LP - left front wheel
  • PP - right front wheel
  • LT - left rear wheel
  • PT - right rear wheel

Cleaning the hubs before fitting winter or summer wheels

Before assembling the "new" wheel, it is advisable to clean the contact surface of the hub from rust and oxidized metal layer. This can be done with a metal wire brush like DEDRA 2002 . The inner surface of the rim should also be cleaned so that the rim perfectly contacts the hub. Cleaning can also be done with a manual wire brush or, for example, with the DED7050 angle grinder with a brass-plated wire brush, eg F36-100 . We remove dust, it is best to blow it with compressed air from a blowing gun, eg PANSAM A533030 and put the wheel on the hub. Gently screw the wheel bolts into the first threads with your hand, check the contact between the rim and the hub and start selecting the play. The initial hand tightening of the screws is very important to prevent damage to the thread when the screw is misaligned in the hole. The screws are screwed in with a manual or pneumatic impact wrench, an electric wrench or a mobile cordless impact wrench. It is important not to tighten to the "chama", ie we only have to tighten to a slight resistance. We repeat the activity for the remaining wheels.

Final tightening of the wheels after a seasonal change with a torque wrench

We leave the car with the jack and perform the final tightening of the wheels. We make them with a torque wrench with the right moment. We search for the appropriate value in accordance with the instructions of our car, usually from 80-120Nm. Tightening with a torque wrench reduces the risk that we will have problems with unscrewing the wheel in the event of a failure or the next time the wheels are changed. An excessively tightened bolt, e.g. with an impact wrench, may jam and break when you try to unscrew it. This is a serious problem, especially in the event of a breakdown, and requires the broken bolt to be removed in a workshop. In the worst case, we will have to replace the entire hub.

Check the air pressure in the tires after replacing the wheels

Before setting off on a tour, we check the tire pressure. If we have a compressor at our disposal, it is worth equipping it witha7.pl/product-pol-24681-Pistolet-do-pompowania-PANSAM-A533050.html"> a gun for inflating wheels, e.g. PANSAM A533050 or the entire set of pneumatic accessories A532009 . It is also good to go to the diagnostic station to perform the measurement If we do not have a compressor, we can use the DED7073 battery car compressor . The built-in pressure gauge allows you to read the tire pressure and inflate it without having to get tired with a foot pump. The battery compressor is also useful on the road or in the city, when you can't drive to the gas station to inflate the wheel with the compressor.

To sum up, even a beginner DIY enthusiast, equipped with the simplest tools, is able to change the wheels on their own. It is known that the more tools, the more comfortable or a bit faster work, but the most important thing is to go beyond the comfort bubble and try your hand at a new role. When buying tools for the workshop, it is worth being guided by complementarity and the scope of possible development. From the point of view of a DIY enthusiast, the DEDRA SAS + ALL range of power tools in the single battery system is noteworthy. Cordless devices can be as efficient as tools powered from a socket, while maintaining excellent mobility. And being able to use the same battery for multiple tools is invaluable.
